A chip seal is a preventive maintenance treatment used to treat raveling, oxidized pavements and loss of friction. Chips seals can also be applied to seal top-down fatigue cracks less than 1/4" in order to keep water from seeping into and weakening the road base.
Once the chip seal emulsion is sprayed onto the roadway, chip seal aggregate, which can vary in size, is spread over the emulsion. This is followed by rolling and compaction. The aggregate helps to provide increased durability and resistance to moisture and heavy traffic, which can cause fatigue cracking and raveling.
Chip seals can also be applied during the process of upgrading gravel roads to paved roads.
