Talladega, AL – Talladega Superspeedway officials announced recently that the Alabama racetrack is set to be repaved for the first time since 1979, and the project is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2006 UAW-Ford 500 in October. The project will include complete asphalt repaving of the 2.66-mile tri-oval track, apron and pit road. Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions, Jackson, MS, will supply the polymer modified asphalts for this job out of their Birmingport, AL facility. The asphalts will be an Ergon Sealoflex PG76-22 for the base course and an Ergon Sealoflex PG82-22 for the track surface. The Justin, TX based Sunmount Corporation will head the project. Sunmount specializes in track resurfacing and their resume includes Miami-Homestead, Texas, Atlanta, Richmond and Charlotte tracks.
A portable asphalt plant was mobilized to the site in December 2005 and on-site work began in February, when trial batches of the asphalt mix designs were produced and asphalt test strips were constructed and evaluated on superspeedway property. Based on the excellent performance data of the Ergon liquid binder and the selected mix designs, the engineers selected Ergon’s Sealoflex Performance Grades of polymer modified asphalts for this high profile paving project at this legendary superspeedway.
